Hotel growth in north Houston is booming as large employers bring thousands of jobs and residents to the area.

With Exxon Mobils campus and Southwestern Energys headquarters now open for business, Springwoods Village has stimulated a need for hotel rooms to serve the rapidly expanding employment center in north Harris County, said Keith Simon, executive vice president of CDC Houston, which is developing Springwoods Village. The development of the Residence Inn is just the first step in our strategy to provide a range of hotel products at different price points within walking distance of work centers.

The Marriott Residence Inn extended-stay hotel is under construction at the western end of CityPlace in Springwoods Village, a 1,800-acre planned community west of Interstate 45 in northern Harris County. The hotel is expected to open in mid-2015.

And construction will start soon on a Marriott Courtyard hotel in Springwoods Village, south of the Residence Inn, with an expected opening in mid-2016.

Additionally, Woodbine Development Corp. will develop a full service luxury hotel in CityPlace with meeting space, and two additional hotels in Springwoods Village are planned. The hotels will be announced when the agreements and brands are formalized, according to CDC Houston.

Nearby, Homewood Suites by Hilton Longview, located at 23800 Interstate 45 North, is expected to open in April. The four-story, 123-suite hotel contains more than 88,000 square feet. The new facility will be made up of a mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom rooms, all with fully equipped kitchens and separate sleeping and living spaces.

One of the reasons for the growth is a rejuvenated economy, said Barbara Thomason, president of the Hou-ston Northwest Chamber of Commerce. And the move to the area by large employers – Exxon Mobil, Southwestern Energy and Noble Energys move to the 249 corridor. There is an overall uplifting feeling that businesses have in this community as a result of all of this; theres an excitement. We are pleased to see this and we are working hard to be supportive of the businesses and the growth.

In addition, the improved infrastructure, including the Grand Parkway construction, is helping to bring more businesses to the area, she said.

It generates a land grab around it because now you have frontage on a large highway, Thomason said.

In Tomball, a Staybridge Suites has been approved for 10011 FM 2920. The hotel, with 94 rooms, is ex-pected to open in late 2015 or 2016. And a Holiday Inn Express has been approved at 14055 Park Drive in Tomball. The 72-room hotel is slated for late 2015 or 2016. Additionally, commercial developers and the city of Tomball are working on a new 34-acre mixed-use development near the heart of the historic Tomball Depot. Peck Station, a $50 million development, to be developed over the next several years, will consist of a brand name hotel such as a Hilton Garden Suites or a Courtyard Marriot Hotel that will consist of between 80 to 120 rooms, according to development plans.

The new hotel would play a key role to serve those who are there for training at the Baker Hughes Western Hemisphere Education Center, which opened last May. The training center, located along FM 2978 and FM 2920, is expected to bring in 5,500 trainees per month, or about 66,000 per year.

Two new hotels opened last September in the Willowbrook area, including a 68-room Best Western Premier Ashton Suites, located at 7945 W. Greens Road, and a Staybridge Suites, located at 10750 N. Gessner Drive just off Texas 249, with more than 77 suites.

Also in the Willowbrook area, a five-story Springhill Suites by Marriott, located at 20303 Chasewood Park Drive, is under construction and expected to open in April. The hotel will have 139 suites and 10 meeting rooms.

In addition, a Hyatt Place is expected to open in June 2016 at Louetta Road and Texas 249. Also, a Home2 Suites is expected to open this June at Centerfield and Willowchase.

A Holiday Inn Express and a Holiday Inn may be built in the Willowbrook area in 2017, according to a market study by The Highland Group. And Aloft hotel at Vintage is also being discussed.
